Icehotel
Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Each winter, the hotel is rebuilt from blocks of ice cut from the Torne River. Artists from around the world are invited to design the art suites, so no two seasons look the same. In spring, the building melts back into the river it came from. The tradition began in 1989.
Since 2016, a permanent building called Icehotel 365 has kept ice suites and an ice bar open all year, cooled in summer by solar power. Warm rooms are available too, and most guests split their stay between the two. Jukkasjärvi lies well north of the Arctic Circle, close to Kiruna, so dark winter nights can bring the northern lights.
